There are three reasons why I choose this topic and the novel。 On the one hand, the rapid development of economy and technology gives rise to the phenomenon that more and more people get the opportunity to live and study abroad。 So I believe my thesis has a realistic value as a large amount of Chinese is coming across culture shocks in the foreign countries。 On the other hand, different living environment exerts a deep impact on the relationship between local people and citizens of Chinese origin。 My thesis also tries to summarize the solutions to solve the conflicts by analyzing the specific conflicts of four pairs of mothers and daughters in the novel。 At last, I would like to explore how Chinese and American culture get to converge with each other。
2。 Literature Review
In the past two decades, there are a lot of researches and reviews about The Joy Luck Club both at home and abroad。 The domestic scholars have made a through study of the novel and get a lot of predominant research findings。 There are mainly three different attitudes towards the novel in Chinese academia。 For one thing, a majority of scholars speak highly of the novel based on its theme and content。 This is the main attitudes of Chinese academic circle and readers。 For another thing, some scholars accuse Amy Tan of distorting traditional Chinese culture deliberately。 This attitude is a little bit too progressive。 While some of them hold the view that the novel, to some extent, reflects the conflicts and blending between Chinese and American culture。 This attitude is actually more objective。论文网
Foreign interpretations of The Joy Luck Club mainly reflect in comments。 In March 1989, many highly acclaimed book reviews began to appear in some respected American news media。 For example, in A Game of Show Not Tell, Doroth Wang said that Amy Tan was a contemporary master storyteller and that she is an excellent and gifted writer who can touch people’s heart。 In Your Mother Is in Your Bones, Orville Schell maintained that The Joy Luck Club was a treasure and Tan’s work had actually began to create a new style of American fiction。 Since 1990s, many American critics reckoned that Amy Tan inherited and developed the exotic atmosphere, cultural conflicts and family relations in Chinese and American literature。 Furthermore, she abandoned the starchy image of Chinese women, and had fostered the communication and integration between Chinese and American culture。
The paper attempts to analyze the contradiction and collision in The Joy Luck Club from the perspective of the mother and daughter relationship。 The conflict between the mothers of Chinese origin and their Americanized daughters is, in fact, the embodiment of the collision between Chinese and American culture。 Meanwhile, the thesis focuses on how the first Chinese immigrants and their offspring confront the differences between traditional Chinese and American culture。 From the contradiction and understanding between mothers and daughters, we can see that the two cultures are integrating to a certain extent。
