摘 要姓氏是区分人与人之间的重要符号，也是社会发展的历史产物。姓氏文化是一个民族文化内涵的缩影。英国人的姓氏作为英国文化的结晶，文化内涵极其丰富，其姓氏起源深刻记录了西方国家的社会历史人文风貌的变迁。本文从历史文化角度阐述英国姓氏的构成形式，列举丰富事例详细探讨了英国主要姓氏的起源特征，以及由姓氏反映的国家民族的社会文明状况、历史文化、宗教信仰、民族风情、思文方式、社会变迁，身份地位等文化内涵。总之，研究英国主要姓氏有助于学习语言文化历史，进而提高语言运用能力，为以后跨文化交际做铺垫。27869

Abstract Surnames are a significant symbol to distinguish from other people, as well as the historical products in the development of human society. Surname culture is a microcosm of a national culture. British surnames as the quintessence of British culture have abundant connotation and the evolution of British surnames profoundly witnesses the changes of western society, history and culture. The paper elaborates the constitution and forms of the main British surnames, discusses the origin of characteristics of the main British surnames detailedly with abundant examples, and presents the reflection of a nation’s civilization, history and culture, religion, ethnic customs, way of thinking, social changes, social status and any other connotations of the main British surnames. In a word, the study on the origin of the main British surnames is beneficial to learning language and culture, to improve the pragmatic competence for paving the way for cross-cultural communication.

I. Introduction
With the change and evolution of production and productive in the human history of civilization for thousands of years, different nationalities who live in different places gradually shape their traditional culture and custom, such as the habit of using names. Due to the evolvement of human language, people manage to make use of names as a symbol to distinguish from other people. Then surnames come to people’s sight. The origin of surnames has profound culture connotation, which is the reflection of a nation social thinking, history, religion, custom, geography, civilization development and any other things during a particular period. The study on the origin of the main British surnames not only provides a window to acquaint with their historical and cultural values, but also we can understand the production, the living condition of those people, and their rich inner emotions in depth and detailed. The study is also quite beneficial to cross-cultural communication.
