The number of the overseas monographs of Toni Morrison’s works has reached 300 since 2000. After Toni Morrison’s wining Nobel Prize for literature in 1993, an increasing number of scholars have indicated interests to her novels. There are three stages of Toni Morrison’s research in American academia: First, academic research and papers based on the western literature standard; Second, black scholars take part in the research with the standard of black culture criticism; Third, the mature stage---creation and review are both included in the research. For example, the papers include Olivia McNeely Pass’s paper about the acceptance process of death; Mary Madden’s paper about the narratives in the novel; Setefanus Suprajitno’s paper about Sethe reconstructing her womanhood and so on.
The domestic research and papers of this novel are mainly focused on the following aspects:
First, the study of the themes. For example, Bai Weiwei’s paper about the theme analysis from the perspective of feminism; Ma Xiaoying’s paper about the choice of love---the analysis of the theme.
Second, the study of the language skills. For example, Hu Xiaoying’s paper about the analysis of the novel’s narrative structure; Xe Mei’s paper about the feature of jazz in Beloved’s narrative skills.
Third, the study of the certain figure image in the novel. For example, Li Xuemei’s paper about the analysis of Beloved’s figure image from the perspective of stream of consciousness; Qiao Shiya’s paper about the analysis of Beloved’s triple identities.
This paper is a thematic study focusing on the mother-daughter relationship between Sethe and Beloved. In the first part, this paper would analyze the background of the society---slavery, which has a huge influence on Sethe and forces her to choose to kill her children. She has lost her self-identity for she can not forget the past. At the same time, this paper will demonstrate a totally different type of slave mother to compare with Sethe, which shows the common choice of most female slaves. In the second part, this paper will display the representations of mother-daughter relationship between Sethe and Beloved---Sethe is pushed to give Beloved up and Beloved wants to get her lost love back when she returns. Their twisted behavior reveals the painful memory and the sorrow in their hearts. In the third part, this paper will indicate the power of the black community, which is the base of black people’s normal life. Only by looking out for each other could black people find their identity and live a better life.
