This thesis summarizes the advantages of the video assisted college English teaching, discovers the existing problems and explores the effective strategies for video-assisted college English teaching with the questionnaire and interview method.
2. The advantages of video teaching
Video material is a kind of resource through information, voice and image to show people in the screen. Students can impress the knowledge what they learn by the video (Braddock, B 1996). Therefore, the video play a very important role in the English learning process. Through watching the English video, students can get many benefits.
2.1 Boosting students' learning interest
The traditional English teaching is a teacher-oriented teaching method. Teachers are standing on the platform and teaching lessons; students are sitting at their desk and listening. In order to pass the exam, teachers only use textbooks to teach students and students just accept this way and think textbooks is their only resources to study English. This is the main reason that causes dumb English of Chinese students. The traditional English teaching method is very single and makes the classroom more and more boring. Students can’t feel the enjoyment of learning English.
On the contrary, the video-assisted college English teaching is a student-oriented method. Video can stimulate the interest of English learning with the strong visual and auditory effect (Goodwyn, Andrew 2004). During the watching process, students can think independently and thirst for English knowledge. So, the video can make students focus on what they learn, without thinking of deserting. The reasonable use of video material can supplement the contents of textbook and create a good language environment.
2.2 Enhancing students' language ability
The traditional English teaching has a big problem that teachers teach very well and students study very hard. They can’t apply the knowledge they learned in daily communication. So, the learning of English cannot remain on the book, students should improve their comprehensive ability, including speaking, listening, reading and writing(承华 2002).
However, video-assisted college English teaching can train the comprehensive ability of college students. The native language and pronunciation of video is very authentic, which helps students form the normative pronunciation. To cultivate students’ sense of language, teachers should impart to their students the knowledge about video. Video plays an important role in improving students’ English ability, because it is a crucial means to improve the listening and speaking, to accumulate words and sentences and cultivate students’ English sense.
