1 Introduction
Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), Irish writer, poet and literary critic, is generally recognized as the leading advocate of aestheticism. As one of London’s most popular playwrights in the early 1890s, he had a great impact on modern literature. Oscar Wilde was born in a wealthy Protestant family in Dublin. His father, Sir William Wilde, was a reputable physician and his mother, Lady Wilde, was an ardent Irish nationalist writer and feminist who influenced Wilde deeply on literature when he was a child. In 1874, he went to Oxford and then took his first step on his aestheticism road. After graduation, he settled in London and began his literary career there as a poet. He was imprisoned for homosexuality in 1896, and four years later, in 1900 died. No doubt, Oscar Wilde was a versatile writer. Throughout his short life, he published a novel, many poems, fairy stories, plays and other works in various kinds of forms. Among these, the most commonly known works include his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, his aestheticism representative work, one of his collections of fairy stories, The Happy Prince and Other Stories and his four social comedy plays, bringing huge fame to Oscar Wilde. Although many people sniffed at his dandy lifestyle and sexual orientation, nobody could deny his talents, achievements and effects.
His last social comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest, a Trivial Comedy for Serious People, the funniest and most attractive play in which the protagonists maintain imaginary personas to escape burdensome social obligations, was first performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James’s Theatre in London and considered as one of Wilde’s masterpieces even one of the best social comedy plays in the whole world with the reputation as having “few rivals in its language”. Jack and Algernon are two dandies who create respective imaginary persona for them to pursue pleasure. Gwendolen and Cecily are two lovely girls that want to marry a man named Ernest, a pseudonym used by two men in order to win the two girls’ hearts. After the prevention from Gwendolen’s snobbish mother and Cecily’s guardian Jack, disclosure of lies and secret of birth, two couples finally get a happy ending. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play, which shows the upper class’s attitude towards marriage and the resulting satire of Victorian ways, has achieved great success and is still on stage today.
