Abstract George Eliot, the pseudonym of Mary Ann Evans, is a great English novelist and one of the leading writers of Victorian time. She has written many novels familiar to millions across the world. Middlemarch, her longest novel, is one of her masterpieces.47133
Ecology is the scientific study of interactions between inpiduals and their environment. In recent years, researches try to explore the relationship between human being and environment from the view of ecology. Ecological systems theory provides a totally new perspective for the literature study. Ecological systems theory states that human development is influenced by the different types of environmental systems. Social quality is the basic quality of human beings. People are not alone in the society, but are associated with others around them. So inpidual is vulnerable to suffer different influences from different directions in the process of his growth. This thesis intends to discuss love stories and dreams of Dorothea and Lydgate, the two protagonists in Middlemarch, and study the reasons for their miserable fates from the perspective of ecological systems theory.
This thesis can be pided into five parts.
Chapter One is the introduction to the author, George Eliot and her work, Middlemarch, as well as the significance and purpose of this study. Chapter Two is literature review, which sets out the recent research on this work abroad and at home. Besides, it mainly talks about the origination of ecological systems theory and its development process, and research methodology. Chapter Three analyzes the causal relationship between Dorothea’s social ecological environment and her failure with ecological systems theory. Dorothea’ social ecological environment will cover three aspects: Dorothea’s family education, her marital view, and the social background of the time of her lives, Victorian era. Chapter Four explains Lydgate's social ecological circumstances which lead to his unsuccessful marriage and failure in career. This part develops from two lines: one side is living environment of Lydgate and its influence on the formation of his character, another side is the broad social, historical background described in the novel. Chapter Five is the conclusion of the study.

摘要英国著名的小说家乔治·艾略特一生写过许多家喻户晓的小说。她原名玛丽·安·伊万斯，生活在英国维多利亚时代。《米德尔马契》是她的代表作之一，也是她最长的一部小说。
生态学是研究个体与其生活环境的相互作用的学科。近年来，众多研究尝试从生态学的维度来探索人类和环境的关系。生态系统理论认为人的成长受到不同层级的社会生态系统的影响，这为文学研究提供了全新的视角。社会属性是人类的基本属性。在社会中，人不是孤立的个体，而是与周围的人产生关联。因此在成长过程中，人们总是受到多种因素的影响。本文将探讨小说《米德尔马契》中女主人公多萝西娅和男主人公利德盖特各自的爱情和理想，并从生态系统理论的视角来解读男女人公悲剧命运的产生的原因。
本论文分为五部分。
第一章是绪论部分。介绍了作者及其作品《米德尔马契》，并简单阐述了选题意义。第二章是文献综述部分。梳理了国内外对《米德尔马契》的研究成果，并阐释了本论文的研究方法。第三章基于生态系统理论，详细分析了女主人的社会生态环境、失败的婚姻及理想破灭之间的因果关系。女主人公的生态环境主要从三个方面分析：家庭教育，她的婚姻观和她所生活的社会大背景。第四章主要研究的是导致男主公的职场失意和婚姻失败的社会生态环境。这部分主要围绕两个主线展开，一是男主人公的家庭成长环境对其性格形成的影响，二是小说中所描述的大的社会历史背景对其影响。第五章是本文的结论部分。
