The novel, Middlemarch, is set in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch. With a title of “A Study of Provincial Life”, it represents the study on the lives of ordinary people, and the complete picture of Victorian era. Since its publication, Middlemarch has attracted many critics’ attention and they have thought highly of it. Today it is widely regarded as one of the great novels of English literature. So far, scholars have studied this novel mainly from the perspective of feminism and narratology, stylistics and realism theories; few critics have analyzed the novel from the perspective of ecological systems theory. This paper aims to discuss love stories and dreams of Dorothea and Lydgate, the two protagonists in Middlemarch, and study the reasons for their miserable fates from the perspective of ecological systems theory.
