E-C Translation of Sports News Headlines from the Perspective of Functionalist Translation Theory
Introduction
Nowadays, China and the outside world are increasingly linked. We have been exposed to an explosion of English sports news. Therefore, it is of great necessity to translate sports news from English to Chinese. In a society with fast rhythm, people have no time to waste. They will only read the news with an eye-catching headline. A headline is the title of a newspaper article. Therefore, the key role of its translation cannot be emphasized too much. However, since the sports headlines have their own distinctive characteristics, it’s more than difficult to translate them from English to Chinese. 论文网
As can be seen, countless research has been conducted on the English-Chinese translation of sports news headlines, many of which lay a solid foundation for further study. But still, a comparatively deep research is expected. On the basis of previous research achievements, this paper will study comprehensively and systematically on English sports headlines translation from the perspective of functionalist translation theory in the hope that some contributions will be made to this field.
This paper aims at exploring some valuable and practical approaches to the E-C translation of sports news headlines under the guidance of functionalist translation theory. In the present paper, the author adopts approaches of descriptive, relative analysis and case study. The sources of the data in this study are from three aspects: 1. domestic and foreign mainstream media websites; 2. authoritative newspapers at home and abroad; 3. related theses and books.
