Abstract Tender is the Night was published in the 1930s. It tells a story that a humble but talented young doctor --- Dick seeks for his fantastic dream and hopes to become an outstanding psychologist in the field of medical science. Finally, his dream is broken and he makes little progress in his career. Besides, his life is in a mess.71702

This paper discusses the tragedy in Dick’s character, marriage and career, and then manifests his mental state and living conditions in that social environment. The tragedy in Dick’s character is analyzed from his vanity, cowardice, the conflict between Dick and the social environment. His disloyalty to marriage, fancy and different social status between Dick and his wife result in his tragedy in marriage. The main causes of his tragedy in career are lack of determination and the prevalence of hedonism. By analyzing these factors, Dick’s tragedy may be learned in detail. To make people see the social environment and people’s mental outlook in that cruel and selfish era clearly. What’s more, people can draw some lessons or get some inspiration by analyzing Dick’s tragedy in Tender is the Night in the contemporary.

Introduction

Fitzgerald, F.S. (1896 ~ 1940), a world-known American novelist was born in Minnesota of St Paul City, on September 24th, 1896. His father was a furniture maker. After graduating from high school, he was admitted to Princeton University. He also wrote literary journals for the school. Due to poor health, he had to drop out of college. In 1917 he joined the army and engaged in military training. After retiring from the army, he insisted on amateur writing. In 1920, he published the novel An Earthly Paradise and became famous for it. After the publication of the novel, he married Zelda. He went to Paris with his wife after marriage, and he met Anderson, Hemingway and other American writers. The great Gatsby was published in 1925, which established his position in the history of modern American literature. He became one of the representative writers of the 20’s “Jazz Age” and the spokesman of the “Lost Generation”.论文网
