Abstract Thomas Hardy, living between the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, was an outstanding critical realism novelist。 Influenced by Darwin's evolution theory and Schopenhauer's pessimism, his literary creation was under a special mode。 He created a number of female images, such as Eustacia, Tess and Sue。 All women in his novels had much in common。 They were gentle and kind, filled with the fantastic expectations of life and hope, but they could never get the happy ending。 The most typical, successful female image of those was Tess。 72327
