Pride and Prejudicee is the earliest work of Jane Austen, it revolves around the marriage of daughters of the Bennetts, a middle class traditional British family, which shows life of the current British society through the depiction of marital problems。
Until now, many researches have been done on this novel。 There are varied view of analyzing Pride and Prejudicee。 Some scholars focus on studying the characteristics of personas in the novel, some analyze the different kinds of marriages; others are interested in the author’s feminist thoughts; still others concentrate on auther’s writing styles。
Professor Hu Qin (2008) focuses on studying different characteristics of personas in the novel。 Jane Austen characterizes bright Elizabeth, the heroine, who is witty and attractive with the positive standard of morals and virtuous soul as well as good sense。 Darcy’s character is a challenge to the perceptiveness of all the other persons in the novel。 There are many different factors established his personality----handsome features, noble mien, aloof trait and enormous fortunes。 Bingley does not trust his own feeling, his distinguishing character is ready “to yield to the persuasion of a friend。” His manner is mild and he is gentleman-like and prepared to fit in with most people。 While Professor Zhou Jilin (2004) believes that the success of the novel partly owes to Austen's engraving effectively some comical characters。 In particular the female writers of Austen’s time stressed the educational character of their novels, thus meeting the society’s expectations。 The consequence of this was that most of the novels were riddled with didactic comments and attempts at moral indoctrination, lucidly expressing the religious and virtuous end of their pieces of literature。By outlining the comical characters and their function in the novel, Professor Zhou endeavors to show that the acceptability of Pride and Prejudicee is for the reason that the novel has followed the principle that the aim of literature and art is to educate and delight the audience at the same time。 Professor Zhou also analyzes the effects of these comical characters。 Firstly, they help to balance the tension and relaxation。 Secondly, they serve as a foil to the main characters。 Thirdly, they function as warnings to readers。 Fourthly, they satisfy readers’desire for gossip。 And lastly, they entertain readers with good-natured humor。论文网
Scholar Bian Kepan (2008) focuses on the different kinds of marriages。He holds the view that the four marriages in the novel can be pided into two opposite groups。 Darcy and Elizabeth, Bingley and Jane can be devided into happy marriages while Collins and Charlotte, Wickham and Lydia should be devided into unhappy marriages。 The first two couples’ marriages are stories that ended well because they are based on true love, respect, equality and mutual understanding, while the other two are unhappy ones because they are just lost themselves in money or beautiful appearance。 As the intelligent Elizabeth has predicted, “How Wickham and Lydia were to be supported in tolerable independence, she could not imagine。 But how little of permanent happiness could belong to a couple who were only brought together because their passions were stronger than their virtue, she could easily conjecture” (Austen, 276)。 When it comes to Darcy and Elizabeth, she believes that their marriage is “successful and happy。” “Elizabeth knows there must be love。 It is quite clear that her idea of happiness in marriage ‘has to do with inpidual compatibility and affection。’ (Jones, 42) She cannot bear a marriage without love。”
Professor Zhu Xiaozhou (2002) from Hunan Nomal University analyzes the irony used in Pride and Prejudicee from both micro and macro point of view with J。 L。 Austen’s speech act theory。 At the macroscopic level, Professor Zhou mainly explains ironical narrations and irony in the plot。 At the microscopic level, Professor Zhou furtherly discusses in four aspects, assertive irony, directive irony, commissive irony, and expressive irony。 Chen Hui (2010), a teacher in Hei Longjiang also holds the same opinion。 Doctor Zhao Hong (2009) and Professor Liu Fang (2009) alanyze the use of irony in this novel by using relevance theory and response theory。 They think that irony stands as the most protruding characteristic in Austin’s masterpiece Pride and Prejudicee。 Verbal irony which is mainly reflected in the witty conversations between characters contributes much to the wonderfully vivid presentation of characters。 Echoic interpretation theory which studies verbal irony from the cognitive point of view highlights the role of ironical utterances in depicting round characters and demonstrates the possibility of applying linguistic theories to literary texts as well。
