Title A Corpus-based Study of the Interpersonal Metafunction of Verbs: United Nations Speeches as Examples

Abstract People influence others and the society with the interpersonal metafunction in language。 Such influence is expressed via special way in speeches addressed in United Nations’ meetings。 Understanding how interpersonal metafunction applied in this context can enhance subjective analysis, thus, achieve intention prediction from the speech。 This paper established a UN speech corpus based on verbatim records provided by the UN and explored the usage of verb and its characteristic in interpersonal metafunction combining Linguistics and NLP theories。 This research shows an observable connection between the changes in usage of verbs and its semantics。 This research also explored the feasibility of utilizing the findings in Machine Learning-based predictions via a preliminary prototype model。
