In order to set up an overall idea towards request strategy and help ensure the day-to-day communication goes smoothly, the writer conducts her research and carries out this paper。 The objectives of this research are to reveal the factors that influence the process of making request and how these factors work on influencing the speakers’ choices of employing various request strategies and what kind of strategy people prefer to employ under what kind of situation。 Different request strategies will be applied under different situations。 Major variables like dominance, controllability of acts, age and gender, will be differentiated from each other in detail。
The research takes Blum-Kulka, House & Kasper’s Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Patterns as the theoretical framework。 And the overall structure of this research is designed according to the major variables in the use of request strategy。 They are respectively, dominance, controllability of acts, age and gender。 The factor dominance can be pided into speaker dominant, hearer dominant and status equal。 And the factor controllability of acts can be classified into when the controllability of act is high and when the controllability of act is low。
Why did the writer take the corpus from the hot TV show Modern Family to analyze requests systematically? It is because after consulting studies on Modern Family released by previous scholars, the writer finds that most of the studies on Modern Family go from the perspective of linguistics, especially pragmatics。 These studies focus on humor analysis of typical verbal humorous utterances in Modern Family from the perspective of pragmatics; humor translation in Modern Family; conversational analysis such as the study on discourse marker “so” and conflict talk in Modern Family as well as studies focus on modern American culture and family education。 But the writer finds that there are scarcely any researches studying on the aspect of making request in Modern Family。 Therefore, the writer thinks it is necessary to look into the request speech act from the hot TV show Modern Family to analyze requests systematically。
Knowing how to make request is crucial in people’s daily life。 By analyzing typical conversations excerpted from Modern Family, readers can gain a better understanding about request speech act theory, especially factors that influence the choices of request strategies and the impacts produced by those factors while making requests。 In this way, readers can not only improve their own understanding of making requests but also choose appropriate strategies due to different situations。 Also, this research is based on the corpus from the hot American television sitcom which was premiered in the year 2009; therefore it follows the features of modern language in America which has profound meanings for English learners to enhance their language competence。 Moreover, the study will help gain a better understanding about how situation goes in America’s family as well as make a better cross-cultural understanding towards this topic。
