2。2。1 Traditional Euphemisms
Most of traditional euphemisms are taboo, just like birth, aging, illness, death。 And taboo shows a rude act to others that people can not accept sometimes。 Taboo will turn into euphemism if people talk these things indirectly。 And euphemisms can give people an impression of indirectness and connotation。 For example, birth, refers to the beautiful or ugly appearance, fat or thin figure, the deficiency of physical health。 As the old saying goes, the love for beauty is common for all men。 However, the reality is so cruel that would not be transformed for your will。 Therefore, people use a relatively indirect way to express their ideas about appearance。 In English, when people talk about a person who has a common even a ugly appearance, they usually remark this person with the word of common or plain rather than sharp words like ugly。 This is the example that approves the functions of euphemisms。
