The Sun Also Rises attracts much attention since it has been published。 Scholars mainly analyze the novel from the following aspects: Hemingway’s manuscript research, narrative study, and the research about gender as well as ethnic identity。 However, this thesis will analyze the novel from the perspective of nihilism。 In the novel, Hemingway emphatically describes the tragic love between Jake and Brett。 Due to Jake’s impotence, they were doomed not to be lifelong companion for each other。 Meanwhile, due to the persecution of war and inequality between men and women in the patriarchal society, many tragic stories caused by the unfortunate love occurred among the characters。
According to the analysis of the characters’ confusions, depressions and the origin of their sentiment, it can be found that Hemingway intended to express nihilism through the life and emotions of characters。 It is expected that more students and scholars will pay more attention to this work and make further studies。
