    1.2 General Purpose
    The first purpose of this thesis is to make the definition and classification of honorific clear and definite. The second one is to exam the three frequently-used teaching methods and to find the most suitable one in honorific teaching. Then the thesis is trying to conclude the common biased errors that would appear during native English speaker’s honorific learning. And there is probably a certain relationship in terms of mother-tongue interference and the biased errors. The author attempts to focus on the appellative honorific particularly, and discuss how the mother-tongue can affect native English speakers when they learn the appellative honorific, and propose a solution to settle the problem.

    1.3 The Significance of This Study
    Since the eighties of the last century, a batch of experts have made great achievements in the field of Chinese honorific research and a multitude of findings have been discovered on the comparison between Chinese and foreign languages. However, most of the experts and their publications made the analysis from the view of linguistic and lexicology, and their study is comprehensive but sparse in content. This thesis confines attention to a particular kind of influence working on a particular branch of honorific from the aspect of teaching Chinese as a second language. The author would put forward the predictable errors made by native English speakers and explain the interference of mother-tongue language in the perspective of theory, and present effective solutions towards the field in a more deepgoing and concrete way in the view of practice.

    1.4 The Organization of the Thesis
    The thesis concludes five chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction. In this chapter, the background of the study, the general purpose, the significance of the study and the arrangement of this thesis are stated. Chapter 2 is the literature review about this thesis. Previous study on biased errors, Chinese honorific and teaching methods would be collected to offer the theory support. Then the blank in this field would be listed. And this thesis would try to fill such a gap. In the Chapter 3, the author would try to settle all kinds of predecessors’ classification towards appellative honorific, and sum up the most typical one suitable for this thesis’s study. Then the author would analyze how the mother-tongue interference impacts foreign people’s Chinese learning and propose the possible errors. And in the conclusion, effective methods would be selected to strengthen the honorific learning, and suggestions are proposed to reduce the happening of biased errors and the influence of mother-tongue influence.
