Based on the special requirements of subtitles translation, Zhao Chunmei, an editor from the International Department of CCTV, analyzes four main conflicting demands facing a translator in the process of translation in “Four Pairs of Conflicts in Film Translation”(赵春梅,2002:7)----length VS content, word order VS picture order, naturalization VS alienation, and transliteration VS semantic translation。 She also points out that translation is a kind of cultural communication which involves people’s way of thinking。 As a result, translators should stick to the principle of seeking common ground while reserving differences and more importantly, and take into account the cognitive ability and habit of the target language audiences.
Qian Shaochang, a professor form Shanghai International Studies University stresses the importance of film translation in “Film Translation--the More and More Important Realm in Translation Field” (钱绍昌,2000:1) and calls on the translators to pay more attention to it。 He analyzes the differences between film language and the written language and describes the five characteristics of the former。 As Professor Qian states, film translation is gaining more and more popularity among people, but our attention paid to it is far from enough, which can be evidenced in the few relevant courses offered in universities and the scattered published papers on academic journals。
