1。2 Introduction of the contexts

The Awakening is a novel by Kate Chopin, first published in 1899。 Set in New Orleans and the Southern Louisiana coast at the end of the nineteenth century。

It begins in the end of the 19th century grand island that is  rich  in  New Orleans 。The story of the heroine Edna pontellier having Leonard mlodinow, her husband and two children here on holiday, they live in lebron’s wife specially for people on vacation cottage。 Although her husband is kind to her, unlickily  because the job is busy, often have no time to accompany her, which makes Edna had  a chance to talk to a traditional, caring type of Adele and gilardino, and lebron’s son Robert lebron。 What’s more, they get along well with each other。 Through interaction with Adele, Edna learned a variety of free style of expressing emotions, making her out off from the past behavior and repressed feelings and desires。  Since Robert always choose a different woman as a friend in every summer from his teenager, and in this summer he chose Edna。 Two people often walk along the beach, chat together, see Adele sewing。 With the passage of time, the relationship between  the  two people simply having a subtle change, Robert’s concern in Edna arouse the long repressed sexual desire in her heart。 Edna became more energetic than at any   time, also learned how to swim, and finally she begins to realize her own independence and sexual needs。 That both two people go to church is the highest in  this  novel, after that, Robert is aware that this relationship is not possible, and suddenly leaves from Mexico in order to avoid further development。 The most famous scholar, Brooks once said: “one small perfect book that mattered more than the whole life-work of many a prolific writer”(Brooks 241)。
