2。 Literature Review文献综述

Many experts at home and abroad have explored the definition of English idioms。 According to Ammel, an American scholar, idioms are fixed phrases consisting of two or more phrases。 Its meaning is different from that of the sum of the meaning of each component。(Sun  219) Luo Shi ping, a domestic scholar, said that the construction of an idiom is the fixed words or phrase and its meaning can not be retrieved by putting together the each word’s meaning, let alone the accurate translation of an English idiom。 Therefore, correct comprehension of an idiom is a requisite condition for realization of precise idiom translation。 But this paper focuses on idiom translation, so our attention just goes to the two translation strategies: foreignization and domestication。 Moreover, the problem about which one is superior to the other has always been in constant discussion。 In terms of this issue, Chinese and foreign scholars can not see eye to eye。 From YanFu’s “faithfulness”, “expressiveness”, “elegance” to American famous translator Nida’s “functional equivalence” and “dynamic equivalence”, the essence of their theories is to realize the equivalent translation of the original text。 Foreignization and domestication was first put forward by the American translator Lawrence Venuti in his book The Translator’ Invisibility in 1955。 Venuti pointed out that the origins of these two translation strategies were derived from On The Different Methods of Translating written by German philosopher Scheiermacher in 1873。 In The Translator Invisibility,Venuti made it clear that he preferred foreignization。 Although many specialists and experts have done much research on the two translation strategies: domestication and foreignization, there are few scholars who apply these two approaches to English idiom translation。 This thesis is intended to explore how to translate English idioms in light of domestication and foreignization。
