Abstract With the prosperity of global film and TV industry, all kinds of English films gradually dominate the Chinese market. And there is a basic and special way to translate the English subtitles, considering the characteristics of English subtitles and the differences between English culture and Chinese culture. Translation of English subtitles is an important branch of English translation. In the field of English subtitles translation, domestication and Foreignization are two kinds of vital methods mainly to deal with the different language forms and distinct cultural background. They are the extension of literal translation and free translation, which have a positive effect on English subtitles translation. This thesis introduces the definition and characteristics of subtitles and the theory of domestication and Foreignization, takes the NIKITA as example to analyze the applications of domestication and Foreignization in the translation of English subtitles.61662

摘要随着全球影视业的繁荣，各种欧美大片美剧英剧等逐渐在中国市场占据重要地位，对于英文字幕翻译的研究也形成了特有的一种方式。结合字幕本身的特点以及中英文化的差异是英文影视作品翻译的基本途径。英文字幕的翻译是英文翻译的重要一支。在英文字幕翻译领域，归化与异化是两种处理不同的语言形式与相异的文化背景的重要策略。并且归化与异化的概念也是直译与意译概念的延伸，它们对于英文字幕的翻译有着积极作用。这篇论文通过介绍字幕的定义特征及异化归化理论，具体以美剧《NIKITA》为例，分析归化与异化在英文字幕的翻译中的应用。

 1. Introduction 

Nowadays more and more Chinese people show keen interest of watching movies or teleplays from foreign country especially from American. Watching American drama becomes a performance of pursuing fashion for them. Therefore studies of translating subtitles have vital significance. With this social background, subtitles translation has developed a new field in translation practice. However, comparing with the popularity of American drama in China, the subtitles translation isn’t valued enough in the translation circle of our country. Most subtitles grou ps are made up by fans. T his lead to the various of transl ation qua lity. Some are good some are bad. Even for a work, there also have dis putes. For example, the movie Guardians of the Galaxy released only a week, soled up to 42.6 million dollars in 2014. But the subtitles of this movie had caused great controversy. Be cause there are full of mistakes in the movie su ch as “特蓝”, “捡来的”, “黄河之水滔滔不绝”. Some audiences thought that the translation was humorous and helped them enjoy the movie. The others thought the translation influenced the comprehension because of the strange domestication and Foreignization. So the study of English subtitles is very necessary.
