Title Black Mothers’ Loss of Female Personality and Motherhood Awareness and Its Consequences in the Bluest Eye
Abstract
This paper is to further study Toni Morrison’s work the Bluest Eye. The black mothers are oppressed by both racial and sexual discriminations which result in the loss of female personality and motherhood awareness. They are indifferent about their own personality and lose the greatest motherhood; therefore they cannot control their destiny and can do nothing to their children’s fate which contribute to their children’s tragedy. But in fact, the black mothers are the carriers of the black culture, they should have protected their children from being hurt by racial and sexual discriminations and guide them to challenge against discriminations.

1 Introduction
Toni Morrison is the first black woman writer who is awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. Her first novel, The Bluest Eye, depicts African-American women’s life under the powerful dominance and persuasive influence of the white culture and ideology. Tony Morrison’s works deeply concern American black women’s life experience which reflects their explorations of their existence value and identity in the white-dominated society. Toni Morrison’s novels revealed distorted relations of blacks’ family.Among those relations, the most distinguishing relation is the one between mothers and their daughters. She depicted the black women’s female personality and motherhood awareness as a sort of complicated beings influenced by strong physiological, psychological, race, patriarchal system and cultural factors. Meanwhile, the female personality and motherhood she described are self-contradictory. On the one hand, they are dreadful and destructive. To protect their children, they could even choose to hurt or kill them by themselves. On the other hand, they are warm and strong. Deep in their heart, they wish to give their children better life and would have sacrificed themselves. This kind of female personality and motherhood are contradictory, but these black mothers still deserve our sympathy. They do not have independent personality and economic status. Being persecuted, they are numb in personality. They are not able to protect their female personality, not to mention their daughters’. Moreover, they do not even have the protection consciousness. This loss of female personality and motherhood awareness contribute to their children’s tragedy in a certain extent. Although widespread studies and cultural surveys on the white’s culture and the black women’s loss of female subjectivity and identity have been done, few researches have been focus particularly on the relationship between the black mother’s loss of female personality and motherhood awareness and the tragedies of their children. This study mainly investigates black mothers’ loss of female personality and motherhood awareness as well as its consequences.
