The white culture crashed on the black people and changed their values. Such environment arouse the black women’s identity confusion, and the long term's confusion lead to their self-lost and denial. 2 Black Mothers’ Loss of Female Personality and Motherhood Awareness
2.1 Female Personality and Motherhood Awareness
Motherhood is a symbol of life origin in western culture. Mothers endow children with life and raise them. In this sense, mother represents the beginning of life, history and even the other things. However, the inferiority of women has a long history either for the law of human society or because of the physical and psychological gender differences. In the patrilineal society, woman is nothing but the affiliation to man. Female personality is oppressed by patriarchy and is equal to motherhood. Motherhood is the only thing that is of value for women and indicates women’s fate. Female fertility is the important approach to maintain the continuation of the patriarchy.来~自^优尔论+文.网www.youerw.com/
In the western culture concept, the black is referred to an inferior race of people who do not have personality, and race greatly influences the shaping of subjectivity and identity(Soheila Poorali Mansour Kandi; Azizeh Khanchobani Ahranjani, 2011). For a very long time, they are seen as nonentity. And black women’s self-definition and self-cognition are strangled. They are doomed to be victims of the men-dominated society(Song Yinmiao and Chang Zhuanwa,2011; Yin Manman and Wang Xiaomei, 2011). Zhang Jing and Cheng Qingyu use the theory of existentialism, from the angle of alienation,self-delusion and self-choice analyze that Pecola’s tragedy is because of her failure to change her distorted social values. So that she cannot make the right self-choice (Zhang Jing and Cheng Qingyu,2011). Also, the whites’ culture hegemony is the main reason that arouses the black people’s confusion, and the long term confusion lead to their self-lost denial. In the white culture-dominated society, the black measure all things by the white aesthetic attitudes and values. They believe that being white is beautiful while being black is ugly. Thus some of them begin to hate themselves and become confused. They constantly deny their own culture and eventually lose their selves(Jin Ming, 2011; Guo Jiajia, 2011; Guo Yufei, 2011; Zhang Xiaofeng, 2010; ).The low status and harsh living conditions of black female has always been a problem in the United States. And the black community has not played its due role. It should have protected the black culture and maintain their black identity, but it turns into an accomplice of the whites’ culture hegemony. Outside, black people are discriminated by the white; within the black community, there is also persecution which is more destructive(Huang Bo, RenYuefang and Zhang Wenping,2011).
