Chapter One Introduction
1。1 Research Background
1。1。1 The Importance of Vocabulary Learning
English, as an important international language, has become more and more popular and recognized by people。 Some places have set off a wave of learning English, the primary school is of no exception。 Many parents even begin to let their children come into contact with English from the first grade, while the key to learn English well is vocabulary。 Vocabulary is the foundation of English learning, the carrier of pronunciation, meaning and usage, and is also the basic unit of language。 All human activities and communication are realized by the sentences which are composed of words。 If you don't have a certain amount of vocabulary, you can't use the language well。 And because of the large number of inputs and the small amount of output, students are potential to absorb a large number of vocabulary。论文网
1。1。2 Current Situation of English Teaching in Primary School
1。1。2。1 Situation of Vocabulary Teaching in Primary Schools
The current situation of teaching is not optimistic。 There exists some problems of teachers guiding students to summarize vocabulary learning strategies, because they will not enlighten students to be flexible in changing their ways of learning strategies。 In addition, teachers just led students to read the text, to explain the main idea of the text and to repeat the text, ignoring the teaching of words and check of the recitation, so student's vocabulary has not been promoted。 Even if they had explained meanings of words, that is only a kind of mechanical teaching。 Teachers simply led students to read, to listen to tapes and learn to recite by themselves。 Finally the effect is certainly counterproductive, increasing the pressure and metal weariness of the students。
1。1。2。2 Situation of Vocabulary Learning in Primary Schools
80 percent of the students like English , but once speaking of words they will feel horrible。 The main problem is the ability of recognizing and reading words and their methods of memorizing。 Students who study well have a good learning attitude and habits, paying attention to research and summarize their own learning strategies。 They can also control their own learning states, managing to master the vocabulary。 While those with poor vocabulary lack awareness of using associative mnemonic approach and can not skillfully memorize by combining with other things。 Cognitive strategies they used are also relatively inappropriate。
1。2 Purpose and Significance of the Research
Now though primary school students are tired of heavy work and great pressure, they can not take appropriate measures, finally it will only increase their burden。 In recent years, many scholars have begun their study on associative mnemonic approach。 However, most of them just focus on the study of vocabulary learning of college students and graduate students, the study on primary school students is not much。 If my study can be successful, it will greatly reduce the burden on students, let them remember more words in a shorter time。 This can be of great help to primary school English teaching。
1。3 Structure of the Thesis
This thesis consists of five chapters。 Chapter One is the whole introduction of it, including the research background, situation of vocabulary learning, purpose and significance of the research and so on。 Chapter Two is a literature review on vocabulary associative mnemonic approach。 Chapter Three is a methodology, which includes raising the questions, confirming the participants, research instruments, research procedures and data collection。 Chapter Four is the results and discussion, that is a comparative analysis on pretest and post-test and an analysis of questionnaire。 Chapter Five concludes the main findings, analysis of the insufficiency of the present study and an advice for the future research。
