Francis (Francis, 2012: 185) has proved that vocabulary is not stored in human memory by isolation, but by association。 Learners should make a positive and rich imagination, so that the process of memorizing words can be vivid。 If the words are vivid, it can also be linked to some of the things we are familiar with, then it is much easier to remember them。
2。3。2 Techniques of the Associative Mnemonic Approach
(1) Pronunciation Associative Approach: The pronunciation of English words are not directly linked to most things。 But students can link pronunciation with its meaning with the help of their own rich association。 This requires students to play full imagination and establish a relationship between the word pronunciation and the Chinese meaning。
(2) Affix Associative Approach: When learn the suffix ‘ion’, learners can associate some words such as station, action, competition, congratulation and so on。 Learners can learn a series of words by this method。
(3) Scenario Associative Approach : The core of the method is to combine some hard words with no intrinsic connection with some bright, vivid, unique images in their minds together, so as to achieve the purpose of memorizing。Through such an association, even originally boring and difficult words will be endowed with unique and ridiculous impressions。
(4) Similar, contrastive and inclusive association: This approach refers to the significant relationships among words。 Similar association includes similarity in word form and meaning。 Contrastive association mainly refers to the relationship between antonyms。 Inclusive association refers to the relationship between part and whole, subordination and hyponymy。
