1Introduction

In 1870, after Dickens, who was called “the god of English” by Lunacharski(1978:462), was dead, Hardy became the symbol of critical realism literature at the last 30 years of English critical realism literature。 Hardy was an excellent novelist and poet。 He condensed his artistic review into the area called “Wessex” in the novel。 He described how this patriarchal society became turbulent from secure, decline from prosperity under the erosion of modern bourgeois civilization。 With his sensibility toward realistic principle, Hardy observed the whole procedure of Wessex’s development, and wrote down this period of history vividly。 Because of that, Lunacharski(蒋路,1978:468) called him “an artist who describes general important history phenomenon” and “a unique realist。

Hardy had a correct comprehension toward the essence of art that the art is far different from the real life。 In Hardy (1980:314-315)’s opinion, there would never be a real sword hunter who can be perfectly harmonious with the nature like the statue of Cupid; there would never be a real person who can be so passionate an tragic like Hamlet or Othello; there would never be someone like Uncle Toby; and Queen Elizabeth in history would never be a perfect woman like Elizabeth in Kennaer Fort Worth。 That was because the realistic truth is a kind of typical generalization, but not an accurate representation of any real event or person, or the copy of naturalism。 When describing event and people with realism, we have to delete other elements that will disperse the theme to make the theme clearly。 It means Hardy wanted to make people in the novels abound in life。 Hardy(1980:314) had already point this out in How to calculate effective reading: “We have to remember that no matter what the realistic principle requests, the best novels are always more real than the history and nature, like other top representation in all kinds of arts。”
