William Shakespeare (1564-1616) comes to the front as a poet in the world literature as well as a playwright。 His 154 sonnets, with long-lasting influence to readers for centuries, have been regarded as a great literary treasure in poetry world。 There are various kinds of themes in the sonnets: love, friendship, beauty, life, procreation, the injustice of society, the cruelty of time, the immortality through verse, and so on; there are intense and rich emotions: love and hatred, satisfaction and complaint, admiration and jealousy, hope and hopelessness; there are amazing artistic skills: vivid and novel imageries, fabulous rhetorical devices, delicate structure, powerful rhyme, and vagueness of the linguistic features, all of which present Shakespeare’s genius for poetry and his masterly command of language。 Shakespeare have made full use of every line of sonnets and created to the utmost in spite of the strict form in English sonnet, considering 14 lines in iambic pentameter with rhyme scheme of abab cdcd efef gg。 And there was almost no peer in Renaissance and even is in contemporary times。论文网
