Because of the limitation of technology, Chinese subtitle translators may not make subtitle translation accurate and effective enough。 After Hans Vermeer (1989) put forward the Skopos Theory, translators could find a proper and unified method to do subtitle translation。 The significance of this thesis is to make scholars who are studying subtitle translation pay more attention to the theory so that the quality of the subtitle translation could be improved。 This thesis is an attempt to analyze subtitle translation from the perspective of the Skopos Theory。论文网
From the perspective of Skopos Theory, the Chinese subtitles for foreign films can be seen as specific Chinese discourse aiming at the total comprehension and understanding of alien culture for Chinese audience。 While the film varies, the translators tend to reach different goals, thus having multiple translation methods。 For instance, The Croods, Zootopia, Frozen, namely the American films popular here in China, attract mostly young audience groups with their goal of being funny and entertaining。 Consequently, the subtitle translation of the film well matched with our Chinese expression, which makes the audience feel the humor and relaxation while watching the show。 On the other hand, for western history dramas, like Tudors, Camelot, Downton Abbey, historical accuracy surely comes before oral humor concerning the subtitle translation。
The Croods earned generally positive reviews, and proved to be a box office success, earning more than $587 million on a budget of $135 million, and launching a new franchise with a sequel set on December 22, 2017, and a TV series in development。 Since there is a globalization in a movie industries era, a lot of producers compete to make a unique story
which can be accepted by both adults and children。 The Croods is one of the movies which fit both to adults and children。 Therefore, the thesis tries to study the film subtitle of The Croods from the perspective of skopos theory。 And it will analyze the classic examples from the The Croods。 It is hoped that this thesis could provide a useful direction and arise the mass’s interest in subtitle translation of The Croods。 Last but not least, it will enable the audience understand the culture not just the language in the film。

2。1 Previous studies on Skopos Theory
In the 1970s, a German skopos school originator called Hans J。 Vermeer put forward the Skopos Theory in his paper Framework for a General Translation Theory to express the translation purposes。 The Skopos Theory holds that the purpose of translation is the primary consideration and then translators choose the translating method according to the translation purpose instead of making conclusion whether using domestication or dissimilation。 Compared with traditional equivalence-based translation theory, the Skopos Theory lays less stress on the equivalence between target text and source text and it does not care whether the target text is perfect or not。 It emphasizes that the target text should be made on condition of analyzing the source text previously。 There are three rules in the Skopos Theory for translators to obey, which are Skopos rule, Coherence rule, and Fidelity rule。 The fidelity rule claims that the target text which translated from source text should be loyal to the source text。文献综述
Since it reflects a general shift from formal and linguistic translation theories to a more socio-culturally and functionally oriented the concept of translation, it has become “a welcome addition to translation studies”。 (Gentzler 71)。 Vermeer thought that the highest principle in the process of translation should be “the skopos rule”, and he also put forward the concept of translation commission, which means that translators got to decide whether, when and how to do the translation job。 In Vermeer’s skopos theoretical framework, one of the most important factors that influenced translation purpose is the target audiences, who have got their own cultural backgrounds, translation expectations and communicative needs。 Later, Christiane Nord combed through all the functionalist school theories and further perfected the theory by putting forward her own functional model, i。e。 functionality plus loyalty, which means apart from conforming to the requirements of the translation skopos, the translator should also respect the valid interests of both the author of the original and the readers of the translation。 Therefore, translators must bear in mind what the function of translation text is, what target readers’ request is and even what the communicative situation is。 Therefore, the purpose of the translation text decides the choice of the translation methods to gain a fine functioning text。
