Abstract Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American poet, short story writer and critic. He is regarded as a wizard in world literature. His writings were always about nightmare, death and evil while other American writers were writing their childhood of a romantic tone at the same age. And he used his creative techniques and the gothic horror to show the cruel of the society. It’s hard for Poe to gain the appreciation from people at that time. It was not until 20th century that the importance of Poe’s literary creations had been recognized extensively by the academic world. He wrote the story The Cask of Amontillado in 1846. The theme of the story is about revenge, horror and death, which is typical in Poe’s writings. When readers are reading Poe’s works, the story can bring them not only horror but also pleasure and beauty. This paper will analysis the beauty of horror in the novel of The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe.
Part one is a brief introduction of Allen Poe and The Cask of Amontillado. Part two presents the aesthetic value of horror from three aspects: beauty of horror, Aristotle’s theory on the Impact of Tragedy and Allen Poe’s explanation to aesthetic value which is that everything is going to die when he is born. Part three presents the examples and theme and soul in the story of The Cask of Amontillado. Part four is going to tell the charm of horror in Allan Poe’s works. Part five is the conclusion.
According to the analysis the conclusion is that since horror brings us so much pain, there are still so many people enjoying them. Because we can find beauty from horror and experience the aesthetic pleasure. Horror is beautiful and pleasant. Poe’s horrible fictions offer the enjoyment of beauty for the readers and made his own history. As the father of detective stories, Poe made contribution to the design of modern horrible stories and detective movies.5818

埃德加爱伦坡(1809-1849)是一位伟大的美国诗人,短篇小说家和文学评论家。他被认为是当代文学的巫师。当其他同时代美国文学加都用浪漫的笔调写着童年美国形象的时候,爱伦坡却在描写噩梦,死亡,恶魔等主题。他通过有创造力的手法和哥特式的恐怖揭露残忍的社会现实。在当时爱伦坡的作品很难被读者接受和欣赏。他的作品直到二十世纪才被文学界广泛重视。他在1846年写了《一桶白葡萄酒》。这部作品是他典型的复仇,死亡,恐怖的主题。当读者在读他的作品时,带来的不仅是恐怖,还有愉悦和美感。本文主要分析爱伦坡《一桶白葡萄酒》中的恐怖之美。

最后得出结论尽管恐怖带给我们很多痛苦,还是有很多人享受他们。我们依然可以在恐怖中找到快乐和美丽。恐怖是愉快和美丽的。爱伦坡的小说带给我们恐怖美的同时也开创了自己的历史。他作为侦探小说的鼻祖。他的写作套路开创了现代悬疑电影故事和恐怖故事的未来。
