The publication of the house on Mango Street brought Sandra Cisneros honor and award。 Critics and researchers showed great interests in this novel and began to study it from various perspectives。 According to their different focuses, they are categorized in the following groups:
Firstly the book was recognized as an autobiographical novel。 In 1992, Maria Elena De Valdes wrote an article “In Search of identity in Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street”, in which she discussed the close relationship between the protagonist Esperanza and the author Cisneros。 Maria argued that Esperanza must be Cisneros’ herself who was looking into the immigrant life within and without (De Valdes, 1995:25-72)。 Robin Ganz also held the same view in his paper, “Sandra Cisneros: Border Crossings and Beyond” in 1994。 He reveals a lot of background information about Cisneros, believing that the creation of the creation of the protagonist Esperanza, her life experience, her community and her thoughts about the whole world was a reflection of the author’s own life (Ganz, 1994:19-29)。 Doyle (1994) also discussed the autobiographical nature of this novel in his article “Haunting the borderlands: La Llorolna in Sandra Cisneros’ Woman Hollering Creek。”文献综述
Some critics also approach his novel from the perspective of initiation story。 Thomas Magi contended in his article in 1995 that The House on Mango Street was the continuation of two initiation stories, that is, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and The Catcher in the Rye by J。 D。 Salinger (Bloom, 2010: 51)。
In terms of writing style, Olivares (1987) analyzed in-depth the novel on Mango Street。 Brady (1999) dealt with Cisneros’ narrative skills and how she explored the changing relationship among the characters。 Sanborn (2001) pointed out that, in Cisneros’ writing of the novel, she had cited a poem from Emily Dickinson to inspire the pleasure of escaping from the crucial immigrant community。 Cruz (2001) paid special attention to the “simplicity” characteristic, for Cisneros’ writing was simple in form but profound in meaning。
