3。2 The Origin and Concepts of Skopos Theory
After Katharina Reiss published her paper Translation Criticism: The Potentials and Limitations, the functionalism or functional translation theory began to be established in Germany。 It argues that “translation is an activity” (Chen Liping, 2000: 71), and are “quite popular in western translation theory”(Chen Xiaowei, 2000: 9)。 The major figures of this theory and their representative works are as following: Katharina Reiss and her “Functionalist Translation Criticism”, Hans J。 Vermeer and his “Skopos theory”, Justa Holz Manttari and her “Translational Action Theory”。文献综述
Hans J。 Vermeer, one student of Reiss, became the key person of the functional translation theory after Reiss constructed the prototype of the functional translation。 In the 1970s, Hans J。Vermeer introduced “Skopostheorie” as one translation theory, which comes from the Greek word “Skopos”, meaning “purpose”。 Specifically, it refers to the purpose of the translation behavior。 In l984, Vermeer and Reiss co-authored Groundwork for a General Theory of Translation, the important monograph in Skopos theory。 In Translation Theory Overview, one work co-authored by Vermeer and Reiss, the concept of “Skopos theory” was officially proposed。 The core idea of Skopos theory is that the intended purpose or function of the translation text determines translation strategies and methods。 In other words, the translation purpose justifies the translation procedures (Nord, 2001: 124)。 In this book, they believe that it is in the certain situation that the human activities happened, thus these activities are undoubtedly intentional behaviors under the specific condition。 As a high level of human’s mental activity, translation also follows this principle。 Besides, there are three rules in Skopos theory, that is, Skopos rule, coherence rule, fidelity rule, among which, the Skopos rule is the first principle。
