2。1 A study on the English teaching methodology
The development of English teaching methodology has gone through the following stages。
The first stage is the Grammar-Translation Method。 The grammar analysis and translation as basic procedures appeared in foreign language learning in the 16th century。 It developed into a popular method of teaching modern languages in the late 18th century and early 19th century。 The Grammar-Translation Method, as its name suggests, emphasizes the teaching of the grammar。 Then it dominated foreign language teaching from the mid-19th century to mid-20th century, and in modified form, it is still widely used in some parts of the world today in spite of many attacks。 文献综述
The second stage is the Direct Method。 It was developed in the late 19th century as a reaction against the Grammar-Translation Method and out of the need for better language learning in a new world of industry and international trade and travel。 It is a method of foreign or second language teaching which insists that only the target language should be used in class and meanings should be communicated “directly” by associating speech forms with actions, objects, mime, gestures, and situations。 It emphasizes the importance of spoken language, and therefore holds that reading and writing should be taught only after speaking。 The objective of the Direct Method is to foster students’ ability to communicate in the target language。
