In English classroom teaching, lead-in is the first and the most fundamental step。 It plays a critical role, especially in middle school。 Students in middle school are very energetic and easy-distracted, so it’s difficult for teachers to catch their attention at the beginning of the class。 Most of the students’ attention are remain in the after-class activities; they cannot concentrate on the books and the contents immediately。 It is common that some students cannot listen to the teachers carefully in the first ten minutes in the class and the class’s effect isn’t very good。 Teachers tend to feel tired at the beginning of the class and so do the students。 That’s why the lead-in stage is so important in the whole classroom teaching process。 Obviously, it is the teachers’ responsibility to attract the students’ attention。 If a lead-in is appropriate and efficient, it can draw the students’ attention and arouse their interest in learning English easily。 On the contrary, if teacher’s teaching techniques are monotonous, the students will feel dull in English class。

Since lead-in in English classroom teaching is critical, it has been paid much attention to by many English teachers and language researchers in recent years。 Many articles about lead-in have been published。 Wang Zhihua wrote "A brief study on lead-in in English classroom teaching" (Wang 131-132), in his thesis, he analyzed the requirements and the methods of lead-in in English classroom teaching。 He thought that a good lead-in should be exciting, interactive, brief, heuristic and relevant。 "Value the first step of English classroom teaching——lead-in" (Ma 28) by Ma Xianghui, he laid stress on the methods of lead-in and he introduced several straightforward and efficient methods of lead-in,such as Setting a scene, group competition and so on。 "The principles and methods of lead-in in primary school" (Yang 119-120), the author introduced the principles and methods of lead-in, such as songs, sports, drawing, multi-media, talking, reviewing and so on。 While talking about lead-in in task-based English classroom teaching, the author suggested a guessing method of lead-in。 From the above, it is easy to see the functions of lead-in, and it is worth studying。 It is evident that more research on lead-in is needed for us。 Therefore, this thesis attempts to explore its application of lead-in。 Herein will present the importance of lead-in, the analysis of the current situation of lead-in and then discuss how to acquire a better class effect by using lead-in。
3。 The Current Situation of Lead-in in English Classroom Teaching
Nowadays, lead-in has been widely used in English classroom teaching in most middle schools。 It turns out that the class effect is efficient, but there are still some problems with the teaching process。
The current situation of lead-in is that most of the students are interested in English and they like learning English very much。 English is also welcomed in middle school。 Meanwhile, almost all the students welcome the teachers to use a lead-in before giving a new lesson, and it shows that lead-in is quite important in English teaching。 Some students like playing games most, the others like listening to short stories。 Other strategies like listening to the relevant English songs, reviewing the knowledge learned previously are popular among students as well。 And only a few students do not care about having the new lesson directly。 It is obvious that using a lead-in is essential in English classroom teaching and it can get a better effect。 Therefore, teachers should keep a watchful eye on the interaction in the class and make a good use of it to stimulate students’ learning motivation in English。
